Homeland Security ends immigrant registration

The U.S. government has ended a controversial counterterrorism program created in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that required men living in the U.S. who came from mostly Muslim countries to register with federal authorities.
Called NSEERS -- National Security Entry-Exit Registration System -- the program required registration, interviews and fingerprinting of male visitors 16 and older from Muslim nations as well as North Korea.

The program targeted men entering the country as well as more than 80,000 men already in the U.S., about 1,000 of them from metro Detroit. Nearly 13,800 residents were further investigated, and 2,870 were later deported.
But not a single case resulted in anyone being charged with terrorism -- a fact that experts say proves the program was a failure that unfairly harassed thousands.
NSEERS did "not catch terrorists," said Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, a law professor at Penn State University who has extensively researched the program. "It was ineffective and alienating."
The Department of Homeland Security quietly ended the program through a notice buried on its Web site on April 28.

Homeland Security immigration program ends, but Dearborn dad faces deportation for minor violation

In 2003, long lines formed at federal immigration offices in Detroit as anxious men from Arab and other countries waited to be registered under a new counterterrorism program.
The government said the registration, including fingerprinting and interviews, was needed to help secure the country in the war on terrorism. But many felt it was ethnic harassment.
"They treated us like animals," Siefeddine Siefeddine, 44, of Dearborn recalled Friday.
The Lebanon native says he went through a registration process from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., only to be told to report back the next day.

Across the U.S., about 80,000 men like him -- those 16 or older from 24 Muslim-majority countries and North Korea who already lived in the U.S. -- eventually were registered though the domestic part of NSEERS, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System. Many were interrogated, and all had to report back periodically.
The aftermath of 9/11

Started in 2002, the registration was part of a broader program that required visitors from those countries to register at ports of entry and local immigration offices. It was sparked by the fact that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attackers were in the U.S. as visitors from Arab countries.
The U.S. gets few visitors from North Korea.

The program "amounted to little more than a crude profiling system" that was counterproductive, said Edward Alden, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and author of "The Closing of the American Border: Terrorism, Immigration, and Security Since 9/11" (Harper Perennial, $15.99). He called it "one of the worst vestiges of the immediate aftermath of 9/11."
The program caused intense anxiety for many Arab-Americans and Muslims, split up families and led to thousands of deportations for minor immigration violations. But in the end, it didn't catch a single terrorist, experts say.

The program effectively ended April 28 when the Department of Homeland Security removed the 25 countries from the NSEERS.
"It's a welcome step in the right direction," said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. "This was way overdue."
In many ways, the registration requirement was an example of government overkill in the war on terrorism, he and others said.

"It was ineffective and a waste of government resources," said Nabih Ayad, a Canton attorney who represented men registered under NSEERS, including Siefeddine. "It was racial profiling on its face."
Family man in trouble
Out of the 80,000 U.S. residents who were registered, 13,799 were referred for further investigations and 2,870 were detained.
Many were deported for immigration violations that ordinarily would not have been a priority for law enforcement.

Siefeddine, for example, faces deportation because he was found in 2003 to have overstayed a visitor's visa, normally a low-priority violation. Now Siefeddine works at a gas station and said he can't go back to Lebanon because of his wife and two children.
Several advocacy groups, including the Arab-American committee and the National Immigration Forum, are asking the Department of Homeland Security to reconsider these cases. The department says it will review them on an individual basis.

Most visitors fingerprinted
Another problem with NSEERS, critics say, is that when the Department of Justice started the program in 2002, it was not properly publicized. Some men got in trouble for failing to comply with NSEERS even though they were unaware of the program.
And many who did show up faced problems.
In California in 2002, about 400 people were detained on the spot when they showed up to register, raising fears in Middle Eastern and Muslim communities. Critics said the process had echoes of registration programs for ethnic groups during World War II.
The U.S. government was low-key in ending NSEERS: Its April 28 notice was not publicized. In the notice, the Department of Homeland Security said it was "eliminating redundant programs."
Since 2004, most visitors are already fingerprinted upon entering the U.S. through the U.S.-Visit program.

Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, an attorney and law professor who heads the Center for Immigrants' Rights at Penn State University, cowrote a report in 2009 on NSEERS that said the program was discriminatory and ineffective.
The problem, said Wadhia and others, was using immigration law to fight terrorism.
"Any policing methods based on profiling will fail -- as was the case with NSEERS," said Abed Ayoub, a Dearborn native who is the national legal director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Happy Birthday, Google to 12 years

http://makrandmane.com/data/images/google-birthday.gif
Today, 27 September 2010, Google celebrates 12th birthday. Although the exact date has always been a mystery, but Google has always celebrated every September 27.

Though not too fancy, Google is marking its anniversary on the entire Internet users worldwide with the logo along with a birthday cake candles on the front page of Google.com, both global and local websites.

However, interesting note, a birthday cake that was on the front page of Google was painted by artists from the United States, Wayne Thiebaud, 89-year-old man, quite famous as a painter cakes, pastries, boots, toilet, and lipstick.

Despite his great works had circulated in the era of the 50's and 60's, Thiebaud is still active to this day. He always dikatikan with pop art movement since the style of painting and interest in the cultural offensive.

Anniversary of Google to this day is still a debate. Internet giants from California was always celebrated his birthday on 7 September and 27 September each year. Strange, but that's what happened for 12 years at least until 2010.

If we trace what happened 12 years ago, on 4 September, Google is turning to Google Incorporated. It could be that, on September 7, a day so that the official Google for the few.

On September 15, 1998, Google.com domain registration. Several years later, September 27, has always regarded as the anniversary of Google's official and apparently will continue to do so.

Michael Jackson Celebrity Luxurious Homes

Behind the scenes, Joseph Jackson pushed his sons to succeed. He was also reportedly known to become violent with them. Michael and his brothers spent endless hours rehearsing and polishing up their act. At first, the Jackson 5 played local gigs and built a strong following. They recorded one single on their own, "Big Boy" with the b-side "You've Changed," but it failed to generate much interest.

The French chateau-style mansion has seven bedrooms, a seven car garage and 13 bathrooms.

Located in the suburb of Holmby Hills in Los Angeles, the house has 13 working fireplaces, a theatre, a wine cellar and a gym. Adding to that is the in-built elevator which makes it easier to travel up and down the three levels.

Interested buyers will have to undergo an ‘extensive pre-qualifying check’ to tour the home, in an effort to avoid diehard fans wanting to see where the King of Pop died.

Although the price tag has lowered to over $28,000,000 Million dollars from $37,000,000 million dollars, it is also infamously the home of the king of pop Michael Jackson. This could potentially either lure or scare away big time buyers. Although Michael Jackson just renting the house for over $100,000 thousand dollars per month while he rehearshed his tour "This is It"
A lush and mature landscape surrounds the estate on approximately 1.26 acres.

The star was renting the sprawling property in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles for $100,000 (£61,000) a month.

He lived in Bahrain, Europe and Las Vegas before renting the Holmby Hills mansion where he was preparing for his upcoming concerts in London.

The King of Pop Jackson died suddenly on June 25, 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest at the home, just weeks before launching his comeback. The entertainer's personal doctor, Conrad Murray, said he discovered Jackson in his bedroom not breathing but with a faint pulse. Jackson was later declared dead at a local hospital.

After Guez recently tried to rent the property for $300,000 a month, and failed, he decided to put the house up for sale at the reduced price to offload it.

Robert Pattinson Homes Design

When Robert was 15, he started acting in amateur plays with the Barnes Theatre Company. Afterward, he took screen role like Curse of the Ring (2004) (TV) (Kingdom of Twilight) as Giselher.

In 2003, Robert took on the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). He got his role a week later after meeting Mike Newell in late 2003.

He has since been cast as Edward Cullen in the highly-anticipated film, Twilight (2008/I). His music will also be heard in the film. Additionally, Robert has completed upcoming roles as Salvador DalĂ in Little Ashes (2008) and Art in How to Be (2008).

Did you  know Robert plays dart and pool? He also liked snowboarding and soccer.

Rob also chosen by the Hollywood Film Festival Award Committee as the recipient of the 2008 New Hollywood Award.

As we've told you, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have been shacking up together in Rob's rented five-bedroom, five-bath home (that Stewart helped pick out) whenever the two are in Los Angeles.

Here are some peeks of the gated abode with a guest house, and no we did not take them. (They were on the original listing from earlier this summer.)

The listing boasted how perfect the "one kind of hideaway" is for those desiring "privacy and serenity," but unfortunately, that's not exactly the case...

You know we protect out dear Robsten and wouldn't want to out where they've been hiding (some new pics of the pad hit the Internet today, taken while Rob was home at the time, super creepy, and Us Weekly months ago), so that's exactly what we're not doing.

But some crazy (or maybe they prefer the term curious?) fans have discovered Rob's address and have attempted to scope out the scene for themselves.

We're told by sources in the Bel-Air community that fans have found the property and have been caught roaming around the premises. Luckily neither babe has been home while fans were literally lurking around in the bushes. No joke, we're told the gate leading to the house is usually left wide open, leaving the home totally exposed to paps and curious Twi-hards.

Rob rented this place before he started filming Water for Elephants, but it's not his main hideout with Stewart. Oh, no. Those two are much craftier and have another secret spot for their rendezvous, which we, of course, would never reveal.

Time to pack up and get out, Robsten! Or else just keep this place for party time. Sure is fab enough.

In order to satisfy your curiosity, and so you to keep your distance, below are a few more shots that were featured on the listing.

A little fact, a source tells us that the 'Robsten love nest' is "not heavily guarded" when Robert and Kristen are not around. In fact, a lot of fans also informed us that they managed to capture their own images of the house freely.

So, are the media outlets (like us) violate the couple's privacy? Or the fans are just so "demanding" that paparazzi think that this is a good story, so they wanted a piece of it.

Simple logic, no fans, no Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. No media outlet coverage means, no public interest. Don't worry, the public's interest for Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart will soon subside, and no media outlet will follow their "life."

The fourth and the last series of adaptations of the Stephanie Meyer vampire novels, it is been confirmed by studio Summit Entertainment that the first part is to be released on November 18 2011, with Part 2 released November 2012.

They'll reprise their roles of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen alongside regulars including Taylor Lautner.

Katty Perry Celebrity Luxurious Homes

At age 17, she began working with hitmaker Glen Ballard, who had produced and co-written Alanis Morissette's chart-topping Jagged Little Pill in 1995. Several years later, she teamed up with the Matrix, a Grammy-nominated production/songwriting team whose résumé included collaborations with Avril Lavigne, Shakira, and Korn. Tired of producing music for other artists, the Matrix had plans to record an album of their own, with Perry serving as one of the group's two singers. The project was ultimately shelved, but not before Perry appeared in a 2004 write-up by Blender magazine, who hailed her as "the Next Big Thing!"

Pop singer Katy Perry and her husband Russell Brand have sold their Los Feliz home for $3.3 million just weeks after splashing out double that on a new Los Angeles home. The interior of the house is awesome take a look at the pictures below.

This four-story 1922-built home boasts a modern kitchen, a Roman-inspired outdoor pool, den, lounge, powder room and a master bedroom with high ceilings and views of the city. Perry put some of her own touches on the house, like the vintage pink refrigerator. She also turned the three-car garage into a costume closet, filled will sparkly stage outfits and purple wigs.

located in the prestigious Los Feliz area of Los Angeles is extremely impressive, featuring several amenities. There is a double vanity unit, a spa tub, walk-in showers, breakfast bar, hardwood floors, a balcony, downstairs reception area, and tall arch windows. The home measures 4,706-square feet, and has recently been renovated. Luxe amenities include marble surfaces, rolling lawns, French doors, fireplaces, and a breakfast bar.

Kayne West Celebrity Luxurious Homes

West graduated from Polaris High School and completed one year of art school at Chicago State University. After spending time rapping and working with local artists, West moved to New York in 2001 to pursue his music career full time. Respected rapper Jay-Z hired him to produce songs for his album The Blueprint, which sold more than 420,000 copies in the first week alone. West went on to produce for a handful of stars including rapper Ludacris and singer Beyonce.

Did you know that Kayne West Has a metal plate in his chin from near fatal car accident in which he was involved in around 3 pm on October 23, 2002. He was driving home from a studio session and fell asleep behind the steering wheel and crashed into another car.

He also nominated for 10 Grammies in 2005. and ended up winning 3.

I saw the inside of his house and I just can’t fault the guy. For someone who talks smack constantly about how superior he is you would expect his house to reflect his extreme wealth.

His house is a 4,200-square-foot three level. It was full of details found in high end homes like a big black granite fireplace and granite throughout. Kanye had all that gutted and redone and had walls blown out to achieve a big serene space without unnecessary details.

Alas, no pool, but there is a theater. And of course no hip-hop artist can live without a large dressing room and West doesn't disappoint.

The large windows offer up some excellent sweeping city viewage, as 7882 Fareholm Drive is located on a hill above Los Angeles, allowing for plenty of privacy and temper-tantrum space.

In West's three-tier modern house at the foot of the Hollywood Hills, luxury is the first thing you see. A pile of Louis Vuitton trunks greets guests inside the foyer; a waist-high neon-green Marc Newson Dom PĂ©rignon bottle sits in his office. Lush cashmere drapes line the windows overlooking Hollywood Boulevard. And a Crestron system allows West to control Bill Gates–style the house's climate, lighting, and music from any computer in the world.

West is a master juxtaposer. His hypercolor, David LaChappelle-esque Pop Art aesthetic produces the measured contrasts that fans enjoy in his music. Besides post-modern plastic furniture, there's a fresco on the dining room ceiling that contradicts the earth-toned minimalism of the overall space.

Of course Kanye hired an interior designer, but he picked someone who would execute his vision, and the results are incredible. It turns out he studied fine art in his hometown of Chicago at the American Academy of Art. I hope this doesn’t mean I have to like the guy, but his house is impressive.

West has art by Andy Warhol, Burton Morris, and Takishi Murakami, who has collaborated with West on his videos and designed some of his cover art. The chair that looks like a bunch of stuffed animals is by Fernando and Humberto Campana, and I’ve seen their furniture in a few modern art galleries.

Twilight Cullen's Celebrity Luxurious Homes

The Cullen's real estate is located in Portland, Oregon, it sits on 4300 square feet, built by Metcalf Construction, with Lucy Metcalf as the interior designer and landscaper. The house was designed for Nike executive John Hoke and his family and appeared in the film Twilight.  Hoke really liked the idea of his house being used as the home to a family of sophisticated vampires and allowed filming to proceed in both the interiors and exteriors.

Some of the furniture in the Cullen home is antique and it is mixed with modern architecture. There is also a lot of Asian accent pieces elegantly placed above bookcases. Do you know what the Native American wooden thing is called that Bella picked up? Its in the deleted scenes.

The Twilight house also featured a dreamy look with glass doors and excellent forest views.

The Hoke House was designed by architect Jeff Kovel. Kovel grew up just outside of New York City and lived there until he attended Cornell University's Architecture school. Since then he has made his way to the West Coast and in 1996 he finally settled down in Portland, Oregon. However, it was while growing up in New York that Jeff realised he wished to become an architect. His family had begun work on a new home and a young Jeff thus developed a new fascination for both building and design.
